WHEN Danny Boyle was conceiving the idea of Slumdog Millionaire, a girl, who as a child had worked as a farm hand in a non-descript village in Maharashtra’s farm suicide zone, was scripting a real life parallel to the reel life story. Her story was one which, if the British director were to know before, may well have inspired him to show his protagonist in the film as winner of a music contest instead of a quiz show.

Two days after Slumdog opened to rave reviews and full houses, Vaishali Bhaisne-Made, born and brought up in a marginal farmer’s hut in Khartalegaon village of Vidarbha’s Amravati district, won Zee TV’s international Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge contest. She won a Rs 50-lakh contract with the company, a brand new Hyundai i10 car — and a career in playback singing.

On Saturday, the girl from the backward Matang community edged past first runner-up Yashita Yashpal and second runner-up Shomen Nandi, polling 18.95 lakh SMS votes to win the contest that saw contestants participating from all over the world.

Vaishali had received a wild card entry along with Shomen, something which didn’t initially go well with her mentor Himesh Reshammiya; he had reservations about giving direct entry to regional Sa Re Ga Ma Pa winners. As luck would have it, Vaishali was chosen his disciple through a draw.

Her splendid show throughout the contest, however, convinced Reshammiya, as well as Shankar Mahadevan and Preetam, the two other mentors of the show, that the wild card was worth it and much more.

Even as Vaishali got imbued in the pomp and show of the final contest in the glamorous precincts of Gateway of India in Mumbai, her native Khartalegaon village and the tehsil town of Hinganghat in Wardha district, her in-laws’ place, burst into celebrations with crackers and drum beat.

At Khartalegaon, her mother Ratnaprabha Bhaisne, an Anganwadi helper, and younger brother Amar, were happy beyond words.

“As a young girl, she worked as a farm hand to buy harmonium and tabla. She always wanted to make it big in music,” Ratnaprabha told The Indian Express. “But I never had imagined that she would do it so well. She has really done our small village proud.” Father Kisanrao was away to Amravati with some work.

After completing HSC in a village school, Vaishali went to Amravati for graduation. It was here that she also took lessons from music teacher Kamal Bhonde. Later, she learnt light music from Nagpur’s Prabhakar Dhakde. That helped her to win the Marathi Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in January 2008.

At Amravati, she found a companion in Anant Made, with whom she started singing on stage. The two soon got married and shifted to Mumbai for Anant’s job. Here she got the chance to fulfill her dream.

She didn’t have the glamourous looks of her urban counterparts. Forget English, she wasn’t comfortable even with Hindi. She had also become a mother and had to carry her threemonth-old son to the sets. Odds, however, were no match for her dogged single-minded pursuit of the goal and her stupendous performance. In all this, Anant, who had lost his singing voice in a mishap, stood solidly behind her through thick and thin.

“Whatever I am today is because of him,” a jubilant Vaishali told The Indian Express. “I always had the ambition to become a playback singer, so I worked hard for it under adverse conditions. In the next five to ten years, I wish to be where many of the famous established playback singers are,” she added.

Hi Aliya, I had this following reply to you. Somehow it ended up in a wrong a place and usual got some nasty tpuch from Crappy HR's fans! :)

"It is very interesting to see how HR’s fans act!!!

They use as cheap language as HR, their attitude is as rude and uncouth as HR!!!
That always brings a HUGE smile on my face!!! It makes me feel good that only certain kind of mass support a trash like Himesh Reshmmiya"

I wonder if certain HR fanatic is part of this site's admin team!!! I really like this forum, hope it is not as manipulated as HR's associates!
