Saregamapa Challenge 2009 Videos of 5th September Episode
Ok..here is another twist in the format of the saregamapa. As only 12 contestants are left, today first 6 contestants will perform and remaining 6 will perform tomorrow. Every contestant is gonna sing two songs, one solo and another duet song. One contestant will eliminate today and one tomorrow. Also don’t forget to vote for your favourite Gharana because next week is Bramhastra Round. So here are videos of 5th September episode of Saregamapa Challenge 2009

Glad that dear d-i-l is out of the show. At least now no other worthy contestant will get eliminated at her cost
was she the bahu one?if so then thanks god she is out.actually the video quality was not so good and even video was lagging the voice,but still we should be grateful to shashi for uploading the videos so fast.so another elimination tomorrow and we will be left with only 10.hamesh is only having zaheer left.may be if he left tomorrow(zaheer) so would hamesh have to,like last year when bappi had to leave.still format and intentions unclear.this year saregamapa is turning out to be like “kyoke sas bhe kabhe bahu the” ,too much dramatic,uncertain and yet unsure to the audiance as well as to the directors.

Now let me give my two cents regarding today’s episode. As I said before, I am not a taansain bus kaansain hoon.. So here’s my say about the episode today:
It was nice to see contestants performing twice in the show, I would had appreciated more if they would had two sole performances in different genre instead of performing duets as one has to rely a lot on partner in such.
As far as their sole performances are concerned I have ranked them keeping in mind the mistakes they had made in paltas and murkis, clarification of words, difficulty of songs they sung and their feelings of the song.
Top two in not any sequence are: Shujaat and Pratibha (difficulty level of songs was much more then other contestants, mistakes were minor and few, feeling and entertainment factor was pretty good)
Third is Yashita: minor mistakes, difficulty level a bit higher then others but not as much as the top two, entertainment level and feelings as much as aforementioned.
Forth place to Faraz for his mediocre difficulty level of song, couple more mistakes as compared to Yashita though entertainment level was better then the rest.
Fifth and Sixth place in no specific order to Anupama and Debojit.. now many people will shout on debojit’s name here but to be honest with you.. he started in wrong “kharaj”.. and made 3 mistakes in antra alone.. Throughout the rest of the songs, if you just listen to him with your eyes closed.. you will feel his grip loosening on the “sur and lay” a few times..
These are my thoughts, if someone feels I am wrong.. feel free to express your thoughts but please.. I do not want un-ethical, indo-pak or non-musical comment and will not respond to them..

Video is fake..in part 4, wen the girl is singing,,,a scene is seen of Sujat, but the singer (the girl who is singing) is sitting behind him. how does it possible?
Bad editing. But not only in the scene of Sujat, also another scene of Yashita. Look at the costume of the girl was sitting behind her.
@agentx i really liked your last line.i.e. have fun and enjoy whatever is provided by zee tv.really i dont know even now what they are upto?but really now after watching today’s episode,a few names have started settling in my head.coz now we are going to be left with 10 tomorrow and i dont know how many they will give another chance?may be 2 or 3.so now on competition will get stronger
Agreed.. and once the names stuck to our minds.. comparison will be easier for us.. still some of the contestants might give us shock once they get the confidence as their time on stage passes.. singing alone or with people you know is a lot easier then singing in front of gurus, mahagurus and people you don’t know..
Bahu’s elimination was obvious, no surprises there. This week’s surprise was Shujat, especially in the duet song.
In solo round:
- Anupama bahu didnt sing well. Feeling well or not, she was the weakest link. I was amused at the way she justified her elimination to her soar throat and cough … as if she was performing superbly in previous episodes …
- Faraz in his solo performance was good. Perhaps the song selection could have been better. He should have selected a more upbeat song with vocals having that ‘punjabi-ish’ throw, which he can manage quite well.
- I am beginning to take Yashita seriously now. Initially I thought she has only few songs in her repertoire and will be eliminated soon. But no! … the way she sang today, enjoying every bit of the song with such command … superb …
- Prithiba is surely one of the strongest female contestants. Naina Saxena and Prathiba are the 2 gals going to the top (Mitika? hmmmmm, may be, have to wait and see more of her)…
Back to prathiba, after the initial part of the song … the way she started the ‘zubaan pa laga laga re’ … ufffff … such clarity and pitch … Bohot khoob ….
- Debojit sang fantastically … I dont know why the judges were downplaying his solo performance … may be they wanted the ‘chakra’ to go to Prathiba (gharana politics?!) … or perhaps they sincerely were right that he should have selected another song … Whatever they say … apart from the occasional lisp in his voice (which has improved, btw) he has got all the qualities of a great playback singer … Throw, clarity, and bullseye pitching … I wish him all the best …
- Todays surprise was shujaat … He is getting better day by day … of course he is a ‘gharana’ singer can sing an aaroh-avroh taan like child’s play but few thing were missing such as confidence, vocal clarity, maintaining tonal quality … which are all coming back to him ….
In the duet song when the song hushes down after ‘mera naghma naghma mera kalma kalma’ … orignial singer Sukhwinder sings ‘yaar misaal e aus chale, paoon ke tale firdous chale’ which such power and clarity that today i was skeptical that shujaat might not be able to reproduce that … but WOW … he delivered it with force and perfect sur …
Duet session:
- Faraz and Bahu: a good performance … i liked Faraz’s RD Burman voice … he sang in three different voices probably to prove his versatility … but he sounded much better when he sang in his original voice.
- Shujaat and Yashita was the best duet performance in my opinion. Yashita was bang on with the tonal texture ‘jin ke sar hon ishq ki chhaon …’. Shujaat delivered real powerful vocals doing justice to the song … Outstanding …
- Debojit and Prathiba: in the words of HR … “Superb, outstanding, fantastic, mind blowing”. It cant get any better than that. Although I thought the scale was a tad bit high for Prathiba but was virtually unnoticable.

???!!!! Wah! Wah! - Hey sangeet visharad , Kahan they aap ?. Bravo ! Succinct , precise review by a true music lover who writes above any parochial considerations. Superstar Reviewers ki sangat (Senty, Mehfil et al ) mein aapka swagat hai.
Most of the songs in episodes are dubbed. So, not surprised about watching Yashita sitting while she was singing at the same time…too many lies!!
I didn’t see Yashita sitting while she was singing at the same time, and I was watching on TV!
@jamshid.you bisected today’s performance so superbly that i felt that they were my feelings.i think most of them are getting their confidence and sur back.faraz is playing dangerously while he should try to play safe as the tone of his voice is so good.and he can go a long way.i think now,in these stages of the competition the choice of song should be done carefully and according to the texture of the voice.yeah anupama might be correct that she has sore throat but that cant be an excuse at this stage where a good performing candidate couldnt have been eliminated for the sake of it.and she knew it and took it graciously.now lets wait for tomorrow’s episode.i am anxiously waiting for kaushak,sara,naina,and zaheer to perform.

Aaj ki Performances were “CLEAR” and “CRYSTAL” according to aadesh and according to Suresh Ji, there was a lot of “NAQQASHI” in shujaat’s performace, and Ofcourse the “HIT” was “GEOGRAPHY”. What is Up with that ? Though shujaat,pratibha,debojit and yashita did very well, I’m still not sure they are capable of taking the show to the 2007 level, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed ! There is also this “Variation” factor that gets me, a “MURKI” is undesirable when the picth and the octave is vaired, Yashita did the same thing in chayyan chayyan and was appreciated , what ? you appreciate the imperfaction? I don’t, simlarly shujaat did the “Laykari” in his solo performance which was termed ” Naqqashi” by suresh ji, but the same song was performed by Amant in 2007 with too much control and perfection, I also think shujaat’s SUR slipped a number of times but he was able to Garb it in Laykari. if I had any peroblem with Shashi , it was simply that he has so much KALAKARI in his throat that most often he was unable to control that, exactly like the little champ Vasubdhara.
But Truely, after this episode things are looking “CLEAR AND CRYSTAL” and as Dr.aamir said, a few names are STICKING, its like the first snow in northern United States when people ask is it STICKING ?because after that, it STICKS for 4 months ! I just hope tomorows episode is not hijacked by these Capable judges, for today, too much money was showered on mediocre performances, Also , I forgot to mention that Himesh is such a Show off, he was looking for Short change of 101 ruppees, but QARZ really proved worthy, and he only keeps 500 rupees bills !

Oh BTW, VOI was superb, needless to say that tomorrows episode is about Ganesh chaturti ! too much religion and too much nationalism is dangerous, I can still be for Ganesh chaturti and saraswati mata, as they are the God/ Godess of learning and KALA,knowledge, but certainly Aditya and almost everybody mimicking Pandit’s was way to annoying rather than entertaining. But thats just me.
I’m eagerly waiting for Dockaul and Senty’s 2 cents on todays performance, Also I’d like to recommend Jamshed’s post above, although I do not completely agree with that, my take is just above this post, none the less a truly analytical post. Jamshed reminded me of 0.02 cents from last year. He used to dissect in a similar tone. and Shashi, You are “PERMITTED” to pitch in as well, after all its YOUR BLOG !
Can someone explain the fromat chage? weren’t there supposed to be 14 contestnats when public voting starts? So will we have 4 people back through brahmastra? that would be nice…:)

Thank god bahu got eliminated. she/faraaz were both weak yesterday. today I expect deepali should levae. Because anyway the zee team wouldn’t want the fvotes from M.P. to be divided between deepali and pratibha. and of course pratibha is going noweher she is uperb. I already see her and naina and mitika in top 3! naina may be eliminated hwen public voting starts but the truth is she and pratibha are bets of the lot.
And what about shashi? If himesh gets brahmsatra, he will bring back sunvinder for sure. it will be apity, because even if 4 come back, i want shahsi, arshad, manisha and tarun to return

i don’t know what you mean by gharana politics. I think pratibha as th ebst yesterday- in range, throw and pitch. She was definitely better than debojit. debojit is proving day by day he is here because he is a ymptahy case and not a singer.

I agree with you. I know debojit will be in top 5. bengalis are too powerful in zee. But instead of debojit couldn’t they havce hsoen sayon/ mansiha? Both these young singers ha dthe spark and talent.
My top 5 will be pratibha, shahsi sumna, naina, mitika and debojit(not becaseu I want debo to bethere, i would prefer arhad but I don’t think arshad will be back)

Please take that mind (bengalies etc) abt Debojit. He may be having some weaknesses like versatality, Pronounciation etc..but he brings Josh to the song.Sayan can not sing Joshila songs..He may be good for soft songs..Manisha’s performance has weaknesses..No consistancy in her singing also lack of confidence too..
But Debojit is better than these..I do not think he will make it to the top.but..He deserves this position..

You see … both prathiba and debojit were partners in duet song and both were applauded … so the judges HAD TO critisize Debojit in his solo performance in order to give prathiba the ‘chakra’ … little bit of off-stage politics and planning … just my opinion .. i might be wrong …
In todays performance (IMO) 3 poeple deserved the chakra
1. Debojit himself
2. Prathiba
3. Yashita
According to ‘gharana politics’ Yashita already had the chakra, so she is out … debojit had it for one week, so the judges wanted to give it to prathiba and the only way they can do that is by promoting prathiba and downplaying debojit … Every judge probably want the chakra in his gharana at least once …
I really dont think Debojit NEEDS any sympathy votes … the guy can make it to the top on his own talent! … It was the ‘Bahu’ Anupuma who was playing the sassu-maa-and-child-at-home card … quite pathetic if you ask me …
sheila i would slightly disagree with you in case of debojit.yes he is a bit retarded and might gain a few symapthy votes but i still have in my head his first day performance when he sang gangster song na jane koi.and because that song from james is a very strong one and everybody cant sing it.the way he performed ,i think speaks in itself.its,in my opinion,not so good selection of songs,rather then talent in cases of most of the contestants.for example,arshad and shashi commited suicides.and faraz and shujat tried their best too to get eliminated.pratibha,naina,yashita,naina are not only beautiful voices but beautiful minds too when it comes to the selection of songs.well done girls

I’m Not a very hard core Debojit camper but your remark didn’t make me a happy camper either, for whatever he sings, he sings VERY WELL, there is No sympathy factor as I see it, I would agree with you if you were talking about zakir of VOI !

Debojit is not ‘normal’ in the sense we use it. He is suffering from some disoder- either parkinson’d diease or some other disorder where the body grows but the mind remains childlike. So I think he is definitely not a regular cae. a psychologist frined of mine also watches this programme, and she confirmed it.
as fro VOI, if they present a sympahy case can saregama be far behind? You know what happens in this battle of TRPS. Both these shows are at loggerheards with each other in terms of TRPS.

I mean PRATHIBHA AND DEBOJIT duet energized the show..I watched it almost 20 times …
superb, fantastic, outstanding, mindblowing, history. their performance rocked out the stage.

It was a nice epiode. But another format change…! Really everything is very disorganized on this show. Did they dcide thisbeacuse thye realized current top 12 is not the best top 12?
If shashi returns thorugh bramhastra, zee will probaly bring him to top 5 but not allow him to win. winner is debojit/sunvinder. mark my words

yes rhea,shashi and sunvinder should come back.they are good and i hope when they come back they choose the songs that suit their voices.this show is like a war pattern,one mistake and you could be the one eliminated.i hope they learned their lessons and when back will rock the stage

Yshita’s weakness and debojit’s weakness is that they cannot sing in a polsihed way. i am not a music expert but if I compare them to shahsi and pratibha and naian I do see the diff. i may be misatken but plz could someone help me here?

Just a clarification……’parkinsons is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects certain areas of the brain that control motor skills and speech. The very fact that Debojit sings so well…..he does not suffer from parkinson’s disease.

I may be wrong abou the name but the FACT is he is suffering froma disroder where the body grows but the mind doesn’t…one can make thi sout from his body language and way of talking.
That doesn’t take away from his singing…but I don’t want him to win becaue he is not a worthy successor of debojit and aneek. though debojit sahha has improved drasticallyof late, his win was not deserved. Aneek was excellent though. and the little benagli girl anwesha in chote ustaad was OUTSTADING but didn’t iwn. so I don’t agree about the bengali lobby theory…
sometimes bengalis are voted out even when theyd eserved to win. Eg Monali thakur in indian idol 2, anwesha in chote ustaad, amit pual in indian idol 3

raghu you are so right,look at the fighting spirit and not the weaknesses of the boy.and as far as i heard his mom told in the show that if he is not normal,he is not abnormal either,so lets leave it.he is a very good and powerful voice full of energy and thrill.enjoy his determination and will power.the way he sung james song in his first performance,my favourite one,na jane koi,i started adoring him.he wins or not doesnt matter,he is a good addition to the indian music stage.in my opinion this year a girl should win,unless they do blunders.
He is only ‘Simple’ ..he is not suffering from any disease.. and i couldnt stop laughing when people say he has Parkinsons..LOL..I should salute the psychiatrist who has diagnosed him just watching him on the TV…:-)
yeah agree shashi, i too am amused on that tv diagnosis that too of parkinsonism.i couldnt help myself laughing thinking most of the singers dance or do certain movements.so are they all suffering from…..?anyway he is a good singer,deboujit.and i like his voice
Don’t mind if i say something observing and watching the show live when his mother said it openly in the show that Debojit is not a normal person but has passion for music Either i’m wrong listening or his mother is wrong to say that. He did perform Na jane koi remarkably well but his weakness was obvious in this episode. His other performances were remarkable and must be appreciated. He is humble and meak person and good at heart. thanks.

I had Just watched the 5th September episode.
Good stack ranking by AgentX. Sahi hai.. I would rank them the same.. except that the “feel” in a song is a majjjjjjor factor for me to like a performance. Ya, I m a kaansen too
My kaan protests in two cases.. one if the pronunciation kicks, the other if the voice lacks emotions.
So I would award extra brownie points to Yashita just for bringing the “feel” into her songs. I never noticed her that much before.. but she sure is stepping up.
Yashita’s solo was a catchy marathi (I think) song. I dont know this song, and I have no clue what she was singing about.. but her body language and her expressions adding to her good singing said a lot about the song and obviously she was enjoying it. I liked her the best today.
Debojit stands out coz he adds the “feel” into his performances as well. Kabhi kabhie kuch over enthu ho jaata hai and then his sur takes a break, but if you noticed in the Debu-Pratibha duet, Debu ek dumm doobke gaa raha tha..”jai jai shiv shankar” and Pratibha was looking very detached and casual. I didnt like her as much in that round as in her solo.. which was very very good. Hmm.. maybe I gotta kooky kaan.
If I give a brownie point to Debojit for the “feel”, I would take it away for his lisp. Clarity of words is important for me as well.
Shujjat slips down in my ranking jus coz of this reason too.. He steps down on emotions and sometimes, I find his classical twists actually hindering an otherwise good controlled performance. Today, in his solo song, his “aa” came out as “ae”.
Feel weel chhodke, sirf sur taal etc dekho to .. Pratibha, Shujjat and Yashita were good today.
Last, but o certainly not the least.. apna Adi putr needs a complete charitra parivartan ..a.k.a character makeover.
He needs a better lipi, mucho better kesh .. err hair-stylist, MUCHO better vastra-designer, go easy on the ati-shuddh hindi (he sounds like Doordarshan gone wild!) and needs to just be natural and comfy on stage. Otherwise, we need a shabdkosh on the sidebar.
Debojit does not have Parkinsons…. he is just too simple for this world !
Its amazing how someone can be “simple” and feel out of place amongst the rest of us !

@ Senty - Dudette ! Do not get into the diagnostic mode in haste. Be prepared for da dreaded TanaaaaaaNaaNana background music for da seedha sadha Debojit. In my cynical opinion (IMCO) Da cash hungry mongrels @ Zee TeeVee will reveal all at an appropriately heart tugging moment.

Now my take on todays episode:
Shujaat seems a bit ambitious and always shows hurry in his performance, and due to this reason he loses control. Otherwise, he has the talent & training to give a good performance.
Yashita is here to stay!! she has good voice and there is feel in her singing (agree with Senty)
Debojeet! he brings emotions in his performance and can move the audiance but loses control of sur often with overdose….
Faraz looked promising in the beginning but has not been consistent so far…
For tomorrow I have hopes with Zaheer and Koshak.
Mehfil G, I too compared 2007 shows (SRGm & SVOI) with the current ones and lost my interest as I miss Mussarat & Toshi. Actually I 100% agree with DocKaul and add that down the line when we will think about these shows, we will remember Mussarat & Toshi only from 2007.
I agree with Senty which supplements my opinion that we have to enjoy the present although we always miss the past.
Thats that, hope tomorrow’s episode is better and more interesting to share our thoughts.

Sorry , No can do. My collection is primarily of MP3 files. The video somewhat detracts from the performance. I still cringe at the editing of Mussarat’s Saanware. The guy was delivering the performance of a life time & the judges were chitchatting, sipping liquids, The mahagurus ??!!*%( Sajjid/Vidya :-)) giggling away exchanging sweet nothings grrr the woes were many , so sorry the only multiple music vdos in my collection are Nusrat saabs live performances.

Yashita & Shujaat’s duet performance was the Best. Shujaat really did Justice to His solo performance…can’t wait to hear him sing more classical songs
For the first Time I actually liked Yashita’s performance…Not bad she can also sing In Marathi…I liked her in the the “Chaiya Chaiya” song
Prathiba has always been Very Good in her performances…She’s pretty…
Faraz performance was good…BUT this Munda can do so much better
I think Debojit’s previous performances were so much better…No offence FOlks But I think he might be making His exit….

ok shashi is not all that..dats y he was out twice..once he was brought bak but he cud only sing one kind of song n dats ghazal…too me dats nothing…da person dat deserves to win this is Debojit..no one can sing like the way he does…he sings from his heart…he sings with his heart out n no other contestant cud sing da way he does…not jus da bheegi bheegi song was gud…da saawariya song was marvelous..give dat song to ne other contestant in da show n dey will never get close to on how debojit sang it…HATS off to him…debojit ur my winner
Ok here is my BIASED two cents. But I am serious.
This time, girls are better than boys on an average. So all the top three singers should be girls. Pratibha (undoubtedly no. 1), Nayana /Yashita (not sure about the ranks).

I think sashi has a wonderful voice. It was very wrong to eliminate him twice. I think the judges should give him a chance cuz he is a SANGEET PANDIT!!!
