Magical Mentors - Bappi Lahiri

Written on May 15, 2007 – 11:41 am | by admin |

Sneak peek into the life of Bappida

Bappi Lahiri or Bappida as he is affectionately known, pioneered the use of disco music in Indian cinema, while retaining its Indian flavour. He was especially very popular in the 1980’s with films like Disco Dancer, Namak Halal among others.

Early Years

Bappi Lahiri was born in Calcutta, West Bengal into a family with a rich tradition in classical music. His father, Aparesh Lahiri was a famous Bengali singer and his mother, Bansari Lahiri was a musician and a singer who was well-versed in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. He began to play the tabla at the tender age of three.

Hindi Films

Bappida bagged his first opportunity in a Bengali film, Daadu (1972) at the age of 19. The same year, he came to Mumbai and bagged his first hindi film, Nanha Shikari. The turning point of his career was Shomu Mukherjee’s Hindi film, Zakhmee, for which he composed music and doubled as a playback singer. He himself sung a duet with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar called Nothing is Impossible for the same film. The songs of his next film, Chalte Chalte, became a rage. With Ravikant Nagaich’s Surakshaa, his singing and music became even more popular.

Current Status

In 2004, he brought out his album ‘Bappi Magic - The Asli Baap Mix’, featuring popular numbers such as Gori Hai Kalaiyan and Jimmy Jimmy, all remixed in the trademark Bappi style. It attained great popularity. In 2005, he composed the background score for the Jahnu Barua film, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara, thus reaffirming his identity as a very versatile composer. In 2006, he lent his voice to another composer for the first time. The song was Boombai Nagariya which he sang for Vishal-Shekhar for the movie Taxi Number 9211. The song turned out to be an instant hit due to Bappi’s singing and the musical arrangement. Of late, he has once again lent his voice to the title track of the film ‘Guru’, in which the music has been composed by A.R.Rahman. He has also recorded songs for the movie ‘Level Crossing’ produced by actor Jayaprada.

Singer

Bappi lahiri also does back singing for his compositions. Though his voice sounds quite different from the typical Indian voice, it is considered melodious.

Some of the memorable songs that he has sung are:

* Rahi Hu Mein (Wanted)
* Tu Mujhe Jaan Se Bhi Pyaraa hai (Wardat)
* Bambai Se Aaya mera Dost ( Aap ki khatir)
* Yaad Aa Raha Hai (Disco Dancer)
* Super Dancer (Dance Dance)
* Jeena Bhi Kya Hai Jeena (Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki)
* Tera Mera Pehla Yaarana (Shart)
* Raat Baaki (Namak Halal)
* Yaar Bina Chain Kaha Re (Saheb)
* Bambai Nagariya (Taxi No 9211)

    I would like to request Himesh ji to be little polite in the show. It is not really appealing to the public the way he talks to senior members like asha ji and others. DONOT BE SO PROUND.
    Love Shekar and Bappida.Gives me a pleasure to see them in the show.
    Sa Re… for sure is going to be a hit this time. Mauli keep up !

      Dear Bappiji,
      I appreciate your softness in comment that I watching from L’ll Champs. You never made any harsh comment. You had contributed lot to Indian Film Industry in your stage, which every have to hats up. Unfortunately, a playback signer (Abhijit)insult you in his interview with Star News Channel. This is totaly a outcome of ill mentality and poor family background. I can’t tolorate this even I like his song. My advise to him is to behave like a human being to his seniors. Thanks, RAJU SHRESTHA, KATHMANDU, NEPAL.

                For Bappida it is really admirable that at this age also he is sitting the leading composer of the indusrty…and at this age also his voice remains as sweet to hear as it sounds while listening YAR BINA…only thing is his pronpunciation of hindi is not so clear..but i think it is his forte…I think SAREGAMAPA have brought him in picture again and people starts reminding his magical numbers like MUZE NAULAKHA MANGA DE RE…from Sharabi..or RAAT BAKI…from namal halal..

                        No disrespect to BL, but what’s up with the low scoring to other team’s singers? The way i see it, you do support your own favorite singers no matter if they sing bad, but when it comes to giving others good marks, you seem to be a little hesitant?? Please be fair to the other singers. Thanks

                            Bhappida,hi! i respect u a lot but i feel that u r not appreciative of other contestants.Honestly,sumedha from ur Gharana is too good but Mauli is really an avarage singer.
                            When other contestants sing,u r stingy in grading them,-6 or 7 & ur face shows it all But u want even for ur average singer 10.Not to apreciate competitors is old style.Pls be like new generation.
                            Grow up!

                              Mr. Lahiri,
                              Greetings !
                              Requesting you to stop being partial towards Mauli. While watching the show I felt you could have better welcome Mr.Kapil Dev when he entered not when Mouli entered. This is the first time I am seeing a Bengali being so partial. We are learnt always to appreciate the good. You have great image so please do not spoil it through a show which will be forgotten after sometimes. But people will remember you for your bad job. So start praising other contestants they deserve much more than Mouli deserves. You have already made her Indian Shakira so what else do you want.

                                      Mouli’s singing is worst singer ever in Indian reality singing Show…. be it VOI, saregamepa or Indian Idol.
                                      she is getting vote because of her physical attraction and se*ual urge by the idiot public/and judges.
                                      her singing is too flat even beggars in local train sings better then her, i can bet my life on this.

                                      sakira, a prostitute form south America who framed vice-president’s son to get rich and famous.
                                      i guess so called Indian sakira is using the same weapon. initially she can’t even pronounce hindi now she is uttering gujju words to get public sympathy.. she came upto this way all because of “THARKI” judges(aka bappida) and idiot voters.
                                      else joy shouldn’t be sitting out :(

You might be talented but fail to see how talented these kids are because you are too much caught up with Image and therefore you completely disregard what people have to offer, whats pathetic is you trying to leave the show like a baby. What a joke. Sorry to be a little mean there but someone had to say that. And theres no one more mean than I am….
